With the
U.S. opioid epidemic moving into a fourth decade, health care professionals
continue to take on the challenge and formulate best practices in pain
management. This five-module course will provide an overview of the current
state of the opioid crisis, an introduction to non-opioid treatment strategies,
and recommendations related to opioid reduction. Emphasis will be placed on
marginalized communities and maternal infant health.
At the conclusion of this educational presentation, the
participant will be able to:
a. Define key terms (Opioid Use Disorder, Neonatal Abstinence
Syndrome, Social Determinants of Health, Adverse Childhood Experiences,
Medication for Opioid Use Disorder).
b. Explain how OUD may impact a pregnant individual’s and a
newborn infant’s health.
c. Describe multimodal pain management strategies providers
can implement.
d. Summarize the obstacles that impact prevention, treatment,
and recovery from OUD.
e. List three FDA-approved medications for treatment
of opioid dependence.
f. Recall strategies a provider
can support to foster opioid reduction.
