Know the Code: Respiratory Failure - Clinical Indicators and Validation

Webinar Session
Thursday, Oct 26, 2023
1PM - 2PM EST

Program Summary & Objectives

Respiratory Failure, a high-risk diagnosis, is under scrutiny by many payers and is easy to deny at first glance. However, a quick review is not sufficient when issuing a denial because of the intricacies of respiratory failure. It’s extremely important for Coders and CDIs to recognize true respiratory failure and to educate providers on the appropriate documentation requirements to support a coded diagnosis of respiratory failure.

During this session, we will review the indicators that clinically define respiratory failure and how to identify when a clinical validation query is appropriate. We will discuss the differences between hypoxic and hypercapnic failure along with the indicators that support acute, chronic or acute-on-chronic respiratory failure.

At the conclusion of this program participants will be prepared to:

  • Identify clinical indicators that support the diagnosis of respiratory failure;
  • Understand the difference between hypoxic failure and hypercapnic failure;
  • Detect acute, chronic or acute-on-chronic respiratory failure;
  • Calculate P/F Ratio to determine severity of respiratory failure;
  • Recognize and interpret abnormal blood gas measurements;
  • Determine when a query is appropriate for respiratory failure.
